An initial exchange of letters concerns Alma's solicitation of Schwarz's advice in her efforts to reclaim paintings she had left behind in Austria at the time of her emigration, especially Edvard Munch's Sommernacht am Strand, which her stepfather, Carl Moll, had subsequently sold to the Moderne Galerie.

Schwarz had known Alma Mahler in Vienna before her emigration; her letter indicates that he had arranged the original loan of her paintings to the Moderne Galerie. Schwarz writes from the Museum of Art, Providence, R.I., and, later, from Davison Art Center, Wesleyan University, Middletown, Conn.
